Sports Academy juniors perform above expectations at the East Regional Championships 2010
Friday 17 September 2010
Under 13 Boys
In the first round Greg met an unorthodox opponent in the shape of Will Henden from Norfolk. Greg got off to a flying start and put the pressure on to comfortably win the first 2 games, the third was closer but Greg completed a 3-0 victory.
Greg's quarter-final opponent was the Suffolk based Gus Beecroft. These two always have a close game and this one was no exception with Greg's extra mental strength at the end of the game giving him the first two games 11-9 11-9. Gus's resistance finally faltered half way through the third game with Greg winning that game 11-6 and the match 3-0.
The semi-final was against a higher ranked opponent in the form of Fraser Linning. Fraser won a close first game but from then on Greg found an excellent depth and width on his shots and prevented his opponent from playing his normal game. Greg took the second game, and then frustrated his opponent to such an extent that he comfortably completed a well deserved victory 3-1.
The final was against Laurence Green, ranked no.2 in England. Laurence took the first game but then with some fantastic retrieval Greg battled hard to win a close fought second game and square the match at 1 game all. Despite plenty of effort and determination unfortunately Greg was unable to put Laurence under more pressure eventually losing 3-1.
An excellent tournament for Greg finishing runner-up
to the England No2 in the East Region U13 event, a tournament
that involves such strong squash playing counties as
Essex and Hertfordshire.
