Hunts County Mens 3 v Comberton 2

With our skipper Billy throwing red wine down his latest designer floral shirt celebrating his 40th, I was captain against Comberton 2. I was greeted by Ash, who with a look reminiscent of Sir Matt Busby about to unleash his babes said, "We've brought the kids along tonight, hopefully it will be a good match." Mmmmm, concerning. First up was Andeeeeee v 17 year old Jack Murphy, who after some powerful hitting was despatched 9/5, 9/2 in the first two games. Andeeee was back to his memorable form of 1997 & 2009, the tropical heat of court 2 suiting his balletic mix of strength and lofty drop shots. Fully in control, Andeeeee closed it 9/6 in the 3rd, well done big boy.

I was up next against 15 year old Sam Bradshaw, a lad with a look of a lost Victorian waif who did not smile much. With my court 2 season ticket expired, I took the first 9/6 in a tight match. This lad could certainly play & I had to stay sharp. With Sam making error after error, I eased the 2nd 9/5 and was 5-1 up in the 3rd when suddenly, I lost all energy and the ability to walk, amusing the home crowd. Sam sensed a fifth game match but I hung on to win 10/8 in the 3rd.

Chunky v Griggsy's protégé 17 year old Tom Blair was the game of the night, which I missed as I was marking my 2nd match. What I can tell you is that with our Chunk losing the first two 7/9, 3/9 and looking like Denty's slower cousin, there was only going to be one winner. Using 40 years squash experience he baffled his Beckham like opponent with his trademark boasts, tight serves and his usual warm, happy, calm low key presence on court. Chunk took the 3rd 9/3 and with Tom's face turning Ribena-like, he lost concentration and the 4th 9/2. The 5th was an epic, soon to be on DVD with the Fenstanton warrior victorious 10/8.

Buddy v Martyn Symmons was one of the few times I have really felt sorry for an opponent. Expecting a gentle amble on a Thursday evening with a glass of port to finish, Martyn ran into the B-train. Having recovered from an 8 day binge drinking festival, Buddy completely demolished Martyn in 18 minutes 9/3, 9/1, 9/3, to say Martyn did well to achieve the 7 points is an understatement. Buddy is back. STOP PRESS: Buddy will be unavailable next week due to an 8 day binge drinking fest in Egypt. Oh well.

Rocket Stevenson v Ash Babbar or should that be Bar Bye. This was a MASTERCLASS and a pleasure to mark. Ash played into Adam's hand on court 2 with his game plan being to outdo our man on length and long rallies. First mistake. With Adam rooted to the "T" spraying the ball around like Picasso with pallet, Ash investigated each and every corner of the court on his way to losing the first two 9/1, 9/1. With Ash looking like he had just climbed out of an Indesit 2000 washing machine, he continued to gallantly defend but the Rocket showed very little mercy closing the match 9/4. Great to see you back Big Man.

Match score Hunts County 20 - Comberton II 2, biggest win for 7 years!
